Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We are now faced with the crisis of memory of the deceased. While memories of two world wars have been dying out, we have felt the threat of mass deaths caused by civil wars, terrorist acts, natural disasters, and others. In addition to the loss of our life, mass deaths deprive us of the meaning of our life by emphasizing the number of victims and erasing memories of their lives. Our study has aimed to pursue the potential of theatre against the threat of colossal loss, which awakens our memory of victims as well as reveals the causes of mass deaths through representation of ghosts on the stage. We have mainly conducted close investigations into early modern English plays and contemporary plays written in English, with some examinations into contemporary Japanese theatre, from a wide historical and social perspective.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
