| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This project investigates the development of encyclopaedias as a literary genre from classical to medieval Europe, with a focus on England. It also explores the connections between medieval European works and their Arabic and Persian counterparts. By covering both the chronological depth and regional breadth of intellectual dissemination in medieval Europe, this research highlights the significance of medieval European encyclopaedias in transmitting information related to natural history to build a pre-modern form of integrated knowledge.

本研究は、博物学的な知識の伝承という問題を、具体的な記述レベルで比較し、汎ヨーロッパ的な古代からの知識の伝承という広い視野に立ち、同時に西洋と東洋の影響関係にも目を配り、ヨーロッパ中世を軸にしつつ、その知識伝播と影響関係を、バランス良くカバーしている点に意義がある。それにより、当時の知識のあり方を総合的に浮かびあがらせ、一般的には未だに「暗黒時代」のイメージがついてまわる中世ヨーロッパ世界が、独自の広がりや先進性を持っていたことを示すものとなりうる。
