Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In 1920, at the end of his first novel This Side of Paradise, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, “all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken (…) There was no God in his heart.” This Lost Generation manifesto lingers until his 1924 short story “Absolution,” a story about departure form Catholicism. However, in The Great Gatsby, written the following year, I found that the writer established what I call “modern belief”, an optimistic dedication to self, life and the world, which might have derived from modern enlightened thought and sentiment. This “modern belief”, however, disappears under the powers and influences of mass consumption and affluent milieu, in his next novel, Tender is the Night (1934).
