| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study, we researched a curriculum to develop English communication skills as a subject for English education in elementary school. In addition, in order to smoothly connect to English education from elementary school to junior high school, we examined the ways to effectively introduce and teach English characters form the base of communication at the elementary school level.
We also examined methods of teaching the five skill areas, particular focus on reading and writing, for an integrated manner, and comprehensive teaching methods through effective " English character introduction" at the elementary school level and through cultivating an attitude of proactive learning and cooperative learning by students, based on case studies from Japan and foreign countries. Based on these studies, we discussed and proposed to the field of education a step-by-step teaching method, teaching materials, curriculum, and evaluation criteria for each grade level, starting from the lower grades.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
グローバル化に対応した「国際共通語である英語力の向上」としての英語教育改革においては、その基礎的・基本的な知識・技能と、それらを活用して主体的に課題を解決するために必要な思考力・判断力・表現力等の育成は重要な課題であると示された。
本研究は、小中高一貫の指標形式の目標を設定した上で学修者が能動的な学びができる「読むこと」「書くこと」を含めた４技能を統合的、総合的に指導する小学校外国語（英語）教育の効果的なカリキュラムの開発、及び、学修者の評価について、教育現場で容易に活用できる評価プログラムを構築することであり、この課題の一つの解決方法として大いに貢献できる研究であった。
