Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this project, we investigated the physical properties at domain boundaries. By using a second harmonic generation microscope, we can evaluate the polar nature at ferroelastic domain boundaries in various oxides. We chose tweed-pattern samples and doping samples to examine these effects on polar nature. Our experimental results show that a mechanical stress and doping enhances the polar nature at the domain boundary.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

強弾性ドメイン境界は高密度化が可能であることから応用の観点からも注目を集めている。特にドメイン境界がバルクとは異なる特性を示す場合には、高密度メモリデバイスなどへの応用が期待されている。本研究では、応力印加や不純物添加により、デバイス開発に必要な特性を増強することが可能である点を明らかにしたことからも社会的意義は大きいといえる。また、反強誘電体における反位相境界が極性を有し、それが相転移することを明らかにした。これは反強誘電体の相転移機構解明の上で重要な学術駅意義があるといえる。
