Outline of Final Research Achievements |
According to my research project, I visited several museums in Japan and overseas in order to collect research materials related to four types of floral motifs depicted both in Greco-Roman and Gandharan art: grapevine, ivy, acanthus and garland. As a result, it became clear that at least Gandharan grapevine and acanthus images were derived from Greco-Roman art in Mediterranean world and symbolize the rebirth in heaven after death. Furthermore, it is possible that the symbolism of grapevine and acanthus was adopted by Gandharan sculptors. By referring to descriptions in Buddhist sutras, I attempted to clarify that the grapevine and acanthus images depicted on Gandharan art are related to the Buddhist thought of rebirth in heaven after death.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
