| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
1) While writing diary has long been a familiar practice in Japan, academic consideration on its culture and history has only just begun. This project achieved to reveal some of the main aspects of "diary culture" in modern Japan through interdisciplinary research and discussion.
2) Since the Meiji era, a huge number of diary have been published, but the whole picture has not been grasped. In this project, I made a database of 850 published diaries in modern Japan (β version) and set it online at daryculture.com

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は、身近だったからこそこれまで学術的検討が不十分であった、近代日本の「日記文化」の一端を明らかにした。その成果は、延いては近代日本の歴史を書記文化史の観点から問い直す意義がある。また、「自己をつづる」という営みの制度的確立と日常的実践の検証により、私小説研究の研究蓄積を踏まえながら、広く近代日本における「自己語り」の構造と歴史を検討する基盤を整え、今後の研究に開く意義がある。
加えて本研究で構築し、一般公開した「データーベース 近代日本の日記」（β版）は、多分野の調査研究に有益な検索環境を提供するとともに、複数の日記の共時的読解への道を開く研究的、社会的意義をもつ。
