Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study investigated the effect of Japanese English prosody (e.g. accent, rhythm) on listener comprehensibility. Although not many studies have been conducted on the relative influence of each prosodic factor, the results of the current investigation suggest stress accent and foot rhythm (basic rhythm in English) have the strongest effects on listener comprehensibility.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

外国語習得の研究は、外国語教育研究の基礎研究となり、教育現場における教授法に影響を与える。しかしながら、日本人英語の韻律に関する基礎研究は未だ不足しており、現場における指導法は必ずしも理論的根拠に基づくものとは言い難い。本研究は、日本語英語の韻律の各特性を聞き手の理解容易度に関して比較し、ストレスアクセントとフットリズムが重要であることを明らかにしたことにより、今後の外国語教育研究や現場における効果的な発音指導に重要な示唆を与えていると言える。
