Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study examined how socioeconomic and institutional environments surrounding voters in a democratic society affect their participation in elections. A variety of empirical analyses assessed the influences of (1) income inequality, (2) population ageing, (3) early voting, and (4) election reforms on voter turnout using data from a large-scale cross-national survey and Japanese municipalities.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は急激な社会経済環境の変化が有権者の投票参加に影響を及ぼしていることを示している。大規模な国際世論調査データを用いた分析から、経済格差の拡大にともない豊かな有権者と貧しい有権者の間の参加格差が縮小すること、健康寿命の進展に伴って60代や70代の有権者が引き続き活発に投票参加を行うことがわかった。また、日本の市町村データを用いた分析から、市区町村内の期日前投票所数の増加により投票率が上昇したという暫定的エビデンスが得られた。
