Outline of Final Research Achievements

This is a theoretical study on manipulating electrons by introducing nanostructures in singular materials, such as Dirac/Weyl semimetals and topological insulators. The study covers elaboration of basic understanding of a phenomenon where smooth (in interatomic distance) change in material properties acts as an effective magnetic field for electron, and a proposal for realizing topological interface states, which form an electronic conducting channel robust against scattering, by introducing nanoscale holes on a 2D carbon sheet, graphene.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ディラック・ワイル半金属やトポロジカル絶縁体は通常の金属・半導体とは異なる性質を持ち,その特異性を活かした新しい機能の開発が期待されている.本研究課題で遂行したこうした物質群での電子状態制御の研究は,新しい物質の理解を深めると同時に特異性による新規機能開発の足がかりとなるものである.また,グラフェンに関しては穴の導入を含め試料の加工・合成の実験技術が日々進歩している中,トポロジカル境界状態という側面に光を当てたことは今後の理論・実験の発展につながるものである.
