Outline of Final Research Achievements

Hall thruster is one of the electric propulsion systems that generate a high-density plasma. It has been hypothesized that the azimuthally inhomogeneous plasma property distribution affects the magnetized electron flow. In this research, a Hall thruster was operated with an azimuthally nonuniform propellant supply, and the plasma property distribution was measured with a high-resolution probe measurement experiment. In addition, a plasma flow simulation revealed the electron flow characteristics under the azimuthal inhomogeneity.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ホールスラスタなどの磁場閉じ込めを用いるイオン源において、磁力線を横切る方向の電子の挙動は未解明の物理現象であった。本研究で得られた周方向プラズマ特性分布の形成と電子の挙動に関する知見は、この未解明物理の理解に貢献するものである。特に、周方向プラズマ特性はこれまで取得が困難とされていたものであり、本研究で得られた実験データの学術的意義は大きい。磁化された電子流れに関する物理解明は、マグネトロンスパッタ装置など他のイオン源の性能向上にもつながるものであり、社会的意義がある。
