Outline of Final Research Achievements

Skeletal muscle fibrosis caused by an increase in collagen deposition often occurs after distraction osteogenesis. This study focused on determining whether platelet-rich plasma (PRP) reduces skeletal muscle fibrosis caused by distraction osteogenesis. We initially expected that PRP might significantly reduce skeletal muscle fibrosis after distraction osteogenesis. However, our study showed no positive effect on muscle following distraction osteogenesis
after treatment with PRP. PRP did not significantly reduce skeletal muscle fibrosis due to distraction osteogenesis.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

骨延長術後の骨格筋において、PRP投与により線維化の減少を期待したが、本研究ではPRPを局所注射投与しても線維化が残存していた。PRPは軽度や中等度に筋損傷には効果があるのかもしれないが、骨延長術のような慢性的な伸張ストレスによる高度で特殊な筋損傷後は、PRPのpositiveな効果を凌駕するものなのかもしれないことが示唆された。PRPの効果に関しては様々な報告があるなかで、本研究では骨延長後の骨格筋に対するPRPの効果を明らかにしたことは、学術的ならびに社会的に意義のある研究成果であったといえる。
