Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) morbidity increases with age. Condylar articular cartilage degradation, which causes TMJOA, is known to be involved in articular chondrocyte metabolic imbalance in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Epigenetic regulation is implicated in cartilage homeostasis. However, few studies have been conducted on the epigenetic regulation of condylar articular cartilage degradation. In this study, we investigated the regulation of H3K9 methylation and its effects on the pathogenesis of degenerative TMJ cartilage disorder. Our results indicate that histone H3K9 methylation regulates chondrocyte homeostasis in terms of cell growth, apoptosis, and gene expression and highlights a possible future therapy option for TMJOA treatment.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
