Outline of Final Research Achievements

we developed a system to deposit H2O molecules onto ultrathin silicon nitride substrates in time-resolved electron diffraction apparatus to apply ultrafast time-resolved electron diffraction measurements for amorphous H2O molecules. The subtracted electron diffraction patterns before and after the ultraviolet photoexcitation represent O-H bond dissociation via multiphoton absorption and charge transfer, which trigger ionization and intermolecular disorder in the amorphous H2O. The results obtained in the experiments illustrate light-matter and matter-matter interactions in amorphous H2O molecules.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

「水」は、物質の中でも最も身近であり、軽元素から成り立ち、その分子運動が極めて速いため、最もその構造ダイナミクスを観測することが困難であると考えられている。申請者は、「水」の光照射下での構造ダイナミクスを観測・解析する装置・技術を開発し、これまで計算的手法でしか明らかにされてこなかった水の紫外線照射下における分子運動を観測することに成功した。本研究成果は、米国化学会より発行されている学術誌(Journal of Physical Chemistry A 122, 9579 (2018).)に掲載された。
