The purpose of this joint research was to deepen the understanding of the history of human-animal relationships in modern Britain. Te project produced a number of publications including T.ito, 'Flying Penguins in Japan's Northernmost Zoo', in Tracy McDonald and Daniel Vandersommer (eds) Zoo Studies: A New Humanities (Montreal: McGill Queens Univ, 2019),pp. 237-261.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
近年、持続可能な発展とエコツーリズムや、倫理的消費とヴィーガニズムなど、人と動物との関係をめぐる新たな価値観と行動様式が、日本社会に浸透しつつある。しかし、一方で、捕鯨問題のように動物の処遇に関する問題は、経済的利害と絡み合いながら、文化的な摩擦や対立構図を生み出している。このような状況において、人と動物の関係をめぐる理念、制度、実践の歴史を、動物愛護の先進国とみなされてきたイギリスの経験に即して、総合的に理解することの意義が、現在、非常に高まっている。
