Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We have developed non-magnetic hybrid anvil pressure cell for spherical neutron polarimetry analysis experiment for the first time. The experiment has made it possible to determine spin arrangement in material under extremely high pressure condition of gigapascal order. We also discovered a unique material that shows multiferroic behavior only in high pressure phase by the neutron polarimetry experiment. In this research project, Noriki Terada stayed in French neutron facility Institut Laue Langevin for one year, and made such a difficult experiment possible.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
中性子ビームを用いた実験は50年以上に渡って、物質科学において結晶構造や磁気構造を決定する手段として使われています。近年、物性物理の多くの分野において、物質内のスピンとそれ以外のマクロな自由度が結合した新奇物性の発現の起源の解明が求められています。中性子回折はスピン構造を決定する最も強力な手法ですが、ビームの強度がX線などのその他のビームと比べて極めて弱いため、非常に小さな試料に制限される高圧力の実験とは相性が良くありませんでした。この研究では、高圧力下でも中性子回折実験(特に偏極ビーム実験)が可能であることを、世界で最も中性子強度の強いフランスの施設で、世界で初めて実証することができました。
