Outline of Annual Research Achievements

【背景】我々が日常的に使用している皮革製品は、「クロムなめし」と「その他のもの」に分類される。生産コストが低く、輸入税率も格段に安いので、世界の皮革製品の80％以上がクロムなめしで作製されている。経済グローバル化に伴い、先進国が環境汚染を誘発するクロムなめしの作業工程を開発途上国に押しつける構図が、皮革産業に関する新たなグローバル・イシューを産み出している。
【目的】クロムなめし工場では、皮革製品の製造に大量の水を必要とする。クロムなめし工場から高濃度のクロム等の有害元素を含む大量の廃液が流れ出ると、工場内だけでなく、周辺水域に甚大な環境汚染と健康被害を誘発する可能性がある。本研究では、皮革製品を輸出しているバングラデシュと、輸入している日本に着目して国際共同研究を実施する。まず、①環境汚染の現状把握→②汚染物質の健康影響評価→③解決策の提案からなる問題解決スキームを構築・実践し、途上国における環境問題の緩和をめざす。
【研究成果】米国のブラックスミス研究所の2013年の報告において「世界で環境汚染が最も深刻な10地点」として、バングラデシュの皮革工場集積地域（ハザリバーグ）が選ばれた。本研究は、ハザリバーグの皮革工場排水路、排水路と河川の交差部、河川の上流、河川の下流の４地域の水をサンプリングし、皮革工場は、クロムだけでなく、クロム以外の多様な元素汚染の汚染源となっていることを証明した。さらに、2014年-2020年にまたがる排水路の定点観測により、汚染の推移を示した。また、Hazard Index等を用いて、元素の健康影響を評価し、ハザリバーグにおける健康リスクは低減する傾向であることを示した。さらに、皮革工場に由来する汚染物質を過不足なく吸着できる浄化材を開発するとともに、皮革工場排液を用いて、浄化効果を証明した。

Reason

本研究では、2022年度までに、①バングラデシュの皮革工場集積地域における元素汚染の現状を把握し、②汚染物質の健康影響を評価し、③解決策となる可能性のある元素の浄化材を開発している。ゆえに、おおむね順調に進展していると評価できる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

代表者等は、バングラデシュの皮革工場集積地域は、無機物質（元素）だけでなく有機物質に汚染されていることを証明するとともに、有機物質の汚染濃度を定量することに成功した。しかし、現時点では、皮革工場に由来する有機物質の健康影響は、ほとんど不明である。そこで、今後は、皮革工場に由来する有機物質の健康影響を調べる研究を推進する。
