Outline of Final Research Achievements

There are concerns that poor management of agricultural and forestry land may lead to a decline in functions such as water conservation. The recent trend of heavy rain and excessive nitrogen may amplify this. In the Koise River basin, where nitrogen saturation of forests has been confirmed, nitrate concentration in the main river decreased during the summer and was markedly lower than that in the forest stream water. The denitrification in the paddy fields thought to purify the nitrogen from the forest. High rate of dry deposition by crowded canopy of coniferous plantations, which have not been thinned, may have amplified the negative effects. The abandonment of rice paddy is increasing in the basin, there are concerns about the reduced ability of paddy fields to control eutrophication in Lake Kasumigaura.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

管理放棄による農林地の機能低下については、農地、森林のそれぞれについて個別の評価がなされてきたが、中山間地においては両土地利用が一体となって流域として機能を発揮しており、これを評価することが課題であった。本研究では、恋瀬川流域を対象として、下流の霞ケ浦への窒素負荷に対する森林と農地、特に水田の寄与を一体的、連続的に捉える評価を行った。この成果は、農林地の管理放棄が進みつつある中山間地の流域の機能評価、それに基づく流域管理指針の策定に貢献する。
