Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research project analyzes why and how wars are fought by looking at the types of political and economic resources conflict zones possess. Its main contributions are summarized in the following three research papers. The first paper offers a formal theory that explains why powerful international actors promote democracy in some instances and dictators in other instances. An empirical analysis using an original data set supports the theory's empirical implications. The second paper explores the political-economic determinants of military strategy during war to explain the intensity of suffering that certain conflict zones and their inhabitants suffer due to aerial bombing and landmines. The third paper demonstrates that political institutions and goods at stake have considerable effects on the functioning of nuclear deterrence, refining the logic of nuclear deterrence theory.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
