| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
There have been a substantial number of psychological studies of cross-modal perception. They mainly focus on the mutual influences between different modalities of perception. In philosophy, phenomenologists have pointed out the importance of “synesthesia” such as hearing the rigidity of glass (without touching it). Furthermore, while seeing the same object, one may see it differently (as when seeing a trompe l’oeil; cf. Wittgenstein on "aspect seeing"). This research project has analyzed the video recordings of various naturally occurring interactions, using conversation analysis as the methodology, and showed that various multimodal perceptions are organized as constituent parts of specific actions in distinct activities. The result has implications for the organization of various instructions (such as instructions on how to see things appropriately) and, moreover, for the ethical issue of the perception of human beings.

本研究は，複様式知覚について，実験という方法を用いるのではなく，私たちが日々実際に営む相互行為をビデオにとり，その相互行為のなかでそのような知覚がどう達成されあるいは何を達成しているのかを，体系的に考察した最初の経験的研究である．このような経験的研究の蓄積は，例えば，教育や教示の場面において，より効率的な学習を促すのに資するかもしれない．しかし，もっと重要なことは次の点にある．私たちは，人を知覚するとき，最初に言葉を聞き振舞いを見て，そこからその人を人として判断しているわけではなく，最初から人として端的に把握している．このことの倫理的帰結を考えることが，次の課題となろう．
