Research Abstract

[Ru^<II>(trpy)(q)(NH_3)]^<2+>(trpy=ターピリジン;sq=セミキノン)はアルカリ条件下でメタノールの酸化反応を触媒し、酸性条件下での白金電極上での酸素還元を組み合わせると、メタノールの持つ化学(結合)エネルギーを直接、電気エネルギーに変換することが可能であるが、反応の進行とともにNH_3配位子がOCH_3に置換され、全く触媒活性を示さない[Ru^<III>(trpy)(sq)(OCH_3)]^<2+>が生成した。一方、[Ru^<II>(trpy)(q)(OH_2)]^<2+>では、アルコール酸化反応の活性化は低いが、アントラセン骨格を用いて架橋した二核錯体[(Ru^<II>_2(L)(q)_2(OH)_2)]^<2+>は、錯体の分解を伴わずに水の4電子酸化反応を触媒し、その酸素量(ターンオーバー数35,000)から、米国人によりTanaka Catalystと名付けられた。ブルックヘブン米国国立研究所のMuckerman博士との共同研究の結果、[(Ru^<II>_2(L)(q)_2(OH)_2)]^<2+>による酸素発生機構は二つのRu-OH^-基から二つのプロトンが解離して生じる4つの負電荷の内の3つは、ふたつのキノン配位子がカテコールとセミキノンに還元されることで収容され、残り一つは、生成した(cat)Ru-O-O-Ru(sq)結合のμ-dioxoのスパーオキシド結合で貯蔵される。さらに、cat,sqが電極でqに酸化される際に、溶媒の水分子が順次、Ruを攻撃することによりRu-O_2結合が開裂され、酸素分子が放出される。従来、高原子価オキソ錯体が酸素分子の発生の中間体として仮定されて来たが、今回、提出した酸素発生機構ではRu(II)の酸化状態は変化することなく一定であり、その結果、Ru-0に多重結合が生成せず、スムーズな酸素発生になったと結論づけられる。
