Research Abstract

本研究では、超強磁場を利用した巨大電気磁気応答を示す新しい磁性強誘電体の開拓を目的に実験を行った。まず最初に、サイクロイド型スパイラル磁気構造を持つことが報告されているBa_2CuGe_2O_7に着目した。Ba_2CuGe_2O_7は磁気転移温度が3.26Kと低い。そこで磁性を担うCu^<2+>(S=1/2)をCo^<2+>(S=3/2)へと変化させることで転移温度の上昇をねらい、Ba_2CuGe_2O_7と類似した結晶構造を持つ低次元磁性体A_2CoSi_2O_7(A=Ca,Sr,Ba)に注目し、これらの電気磁気特性を調べた。その結果、転移温度は5〜7K程度に上昇させることができた。しかしながら、Sr_2CoSi_2O_7、Ba_2CoSi_2O_7においては自発電気分極が観測されなかった。一方、Ca_2CoSi_2O_7においては磁場を印加することで「巨大なマグネトキャパシタンス」と「電場の影響を受けない電気分極(磁場誘起焦電性)」が観測された。
そこで、Ca_2CoSi_2O_7における磁場誘起焦電性のメカニズムの解明を目指し、パルス強磁場発生装置を用いて強磁場中の電気分極・磁化の測定を行った(東京大学物性研究所:徳永将史准教授との共同研究)。
その結果、磁場を増加させていくことで電気分極が発現し、8T付近でその方向が反転していることが分かった。その後、電気分極は単調に増加していき、12T付近で極大を示す。さらに磁場を印加していくと、磁化の飽和に伴い17T付近で消失していることが分かった。磁場印加によって出現した電気分極が磁化の飽和に伴い消滅していることから、特殊な磁気構造が電気分極を誘起していることが示唆される。さらに、X線・中性子回折実験などにより、結晶構造・磁気構造を微視的に調べていき、磁場誘起焦電性の発現メカニズムの解明を目指す。
