Research Abstract

本課題では、ミズゴケ層の炭素同位体比を測定することによって、間接的に大気中の二酸化炭素濃度を求め、その変動と海水位変動との時間的前後関係を明らかにすることを目的とした。
南北5地点で採取した泥炭コアについて、リグニン成分とセルロース成分を単離し、単離したそれぞれの成分について、炭素同位体比を測定した。処理試料数を増やすために、元素分析計付き安定同位体比質量分析計で測定を行った。年代軸を設定するために、東京大学MALTの施設を用い、14C年代の測定を行った。試料数は残念ながら一桁台に留まったが、文献値を援用することにより、コア試料の年代軸を設定し、解析を行った。北半球の代表的な試料として、北アイルランドのFallahogy泥炭コアを、南半球の代表的な試料として、アルゼンチンのHarberton泥炭コアを用いて、いくつかの特徴的な変動ピークを同期させることにより、各半球に特徴的な現象と両半球に共通の現象を抽出した。両半球に共通の現象は、海水位の変動と良く類似し、また各半球に特徴的な現象は、南北極域のアイスコアから復元された気温の差異に良く一致した。以上の考察から、ミズゴケの炭素同位体比から、今まで盲点だった過去の二酸化炭素濃度の変動を知ることができると結論した。現在は時間軸の情報が不足しているため、海水位との連動の前後関係については結論できないが、5百年以内で連動関係を保っていることと推察した。地球化学会で発表した。いくつかの論文を発表したが、核心の部分は現在投稿準備中である。
