Research Abstract

1. The treatment of mother language textboxes in the curriculum of elementary and secondary schools in Japan is different from that in the countries surveyed in this project. In the other countries, there is no clear distinction between main teaching textbooks and supplementary texts.
In the countries surveyed, there are no legal or institutional standards as regards content and number of pages. The books for school use can be published freely. And individual schools can adopt them freely.
In the other countries, mother languages subjects are regarded as the center of the curriculum and the textbooks of those subjects are being related to the textbooks of other subjects.
In the other countries, the teaching of mother language is divided in linguistic teaching and reading, and these two are being taught separately. Therefore, the time allocated to reading far exceeds that of Japan.
5. The national language textbooks to be used n the lower grades of elementary schools in Japan includes existing stories of fairy tales for children in which animals are the leading characters as materials, while in the other countries, pieces whose main characters are real humans are newly written for the textbooks so that students can learn communication skills, manners and etiquette, honorific words, and other abilities useful for human relations naturally.
