Research Abstract |
A method for reactive power planning including Var expansion problem is developed. New features of the developed method are: possible system transitions after contingencies are included to take account of optimal controls and dynamic responses of different types of reactive power devices to be installed; the controls include load shedding which is adopted as a last resort to keep system security against the specified contingencies; a long-term cost such as the annual cost is computed and minimized, including Var expansion cost, and the expectation of the operation costs for normal and contingency states for a specified set of loading conditions. The developed method provides the optimal solution among the various planning options during annual operations utilizing different types of control devices and load shedding. The developed method is able to be applied to various types of power systems. For example, an improved model is investigated based on the UK reactive power market model. The reactive power controls are able to increase the loadability, Available Transfer Capability (ATC) as well as transmission losses, and therefore, theoretically it is possible to compute the price of the reactive powers based on their contributions to the annual cost. Thus, the method for computing the values of reactive powers is investigated to quantify their contributions to the power system operation. The problem takes into account various new factors neglected before, and is formulated as a large scale optimization problem. Then, possible solution algorithms are tested and examined to develop a robust and effective solution method. The research also includes the studies on robust design of control devices and power system operation problems concerned with security and efficiency, such as problems for dispersed generations, microgrids, hydro power plants, and zone 3 impedance relays.
