Research Abstract

本研究では、新しい光波スポットサイズ変換(SSC)技術を開発すべく、(1)平面光回路型のSSCとしてカスケードアップテーパ、(2)光ファイバ型のSSCとして高屈折率層被覆(HILC)レンズドファイバを用いる、という2つのアプローチをとった。
(1)カスケードアップテーパからのアプローチ(1)カスケードアップテーパからのアプローチ
垂直テーパ導波路と平面テーパ導波路で構成されたSSCを作製し、光の入出力を単一モード光ファイバで行うことが出来た。1端当たりの過剰損失は2.6dBであり、良好なスポットサイズ変換特性を得た。さらに、発展型として垂直・水平方向の界分布を同時に変換できるSSC構造を新たに提案してその有効性を実証できた。より高性能化が期待でき、薄型化が可能なダウンテーパ型も考案した。
(2)HILCおよびプラノコンベックスのコンベックス型レンズドファイバからのアプローチ
スポット直径が10μmの通信用光ファイバの界分布を、波長サイズ(1.55μm)程度に集光できる高屈折率層被覆レンズドファイバ(HILCレンズドファイバ)を実現させることを目標とし、実際に1.6μmを実現して目標を達成した。さらにプラノコンベックス型HILCレンズドファイバを考案・設計して実際に試作した。その結果、理論的には波長の1/5以下のビーム径に集光できることを明らかにした。試作・実験によりその有効性を実証できた。
