Research Abstract

The purpose of present research is to clarify the formation reaction mechanism of the oxychloride compounds which are formed during the processing of waste materials and the recycling process. The fundamental data of thermodynamic properties of the free energies of formation of zinc and lead oxychlorides and of the kinetics of formation and evaporation of oxychlorides were observed.
The metals observed in the present research are zinc and lead. To clarify the formation and evaporation mechanism of metal oxychloride, the chlorination and evaporation of behaviors of metal oxides were investigated by using transpiration method at high partial pressure of oxygen. The weight change of metal oxides in an alumna crucible during chlorination reaction was observed with changing partial pressures of oxygen and chlorine and the partial pressures of oxychlorides were obtained. Based on the observed results, the Gibbs free energies of the formation of zinc and lead oxychlorides were calculated.
Furthermore, the weight change of zinc and lead oxides in an alumina crucible by chlorination reaction with time was obtained. The kinetics of chlorination and the evaporation reaction of oxides were analyzed and the reaction mechanism was clarified. The chlorination rate slightly increased with increasing oxygen partial pressure. These phenomena were explained by the formation of zinc oxychloride during evaporation reaction. The stable species of zinc and lead oxychlorides were clarified.
It can be concluded that the effective recycling process of resources from the waste materials such as steelmaking dust etc. which contains valuable metals of zinc and lead etc. is possible by using chlorination reaction.
