Research Abstract

This study is to measure various cardiovascular risk factors after 9-years again in 2006 in 300 men and women who were aged 40-59 in 1997 and to investigate the relationship of baseline nutritional factors to long-term change in cardiovascular risk factors.
Among participants who attended baseline survey in 1997, a total of 260 participants (87%) (129 men and 131 women) attended the follow-up survey after 9-years. Blood pressure and anthropometric indices were measured with highly standardized methods, and blood sample was drawn to measure serum lipids, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, adiponectin, leptin, lipoprotein profile (lipoprotein particle size), etc.
Body weight did not change in 9-ears in both sexes, but systolic blood pressure, serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and glycated hemoglobin A1c significantly increased in women. Hemoglobin Ale significantly increased also in men. For lipoprotein profile, the number of large LDL increased and the number of small LDL decreased with aging in both sexes. Mean LDL size significantly increased with aging in men. Although adiponectin concentration did not change with aging, leptin concentration significantly increased in both sexes. When analyzing correlations of 9-year body weight change with 9-year changes in various cardiovascular risk factors, change in LDL-cholesterol was positively correlated with body weight change in both sexes. Body weight change was also positively correlated with change in small LDL number and very small LDL number in both sexes. Relationships between baseline intake of various nutrients and 9-year change in cardiovascular risk factors were not clear.
The study results suggested that lipoprotein particle size changes to a better direction with aging in Japanese and that it changes to a worse direction with body weight increase.
