Research Abstract |
In the modern society wherein direct communication is decreasing while communication via various media is massively increasing, coming to a smooth interpersonal understanding becomes an important issue. We achieve a smooth interpersonal interaction through various communication channels. Along with the verbal information, nonverbal and Kansei information play an equally important role for a smooth communication in the daily life. Kansei information is very important to keep a good. understanding with each other. In light of this, the head investigator and her co-workers attempted previously to determine which Kansei information is necessary and more effective for a better communication, through findings resulted from experiments on the vocal strategies used by speakers in order to communicate to the listener, the prosodic features of intelligible speech, strategies in the communication of 'importance' in speech, mutual congruence of vocal behavior in cooperative dialogues, the vocalizations in expression of emotion or politeness in speech, and so on. The present study investigated quantitatively the role of Kansei information, focusing on musical communication (interpersonal interaction using musical instrument as a means of communication), by means of measurement of the various factors, such as acoustic characteristics of the performance and physical responses of performer. To eliminate the influence of verbal information, musical instruments were used as communication tool. In music performance performers and listeners communicate with each other, through time serial cues via various nonverbal communication channels. Especially, musical sound, facial expressions, glance, body movements and breathing are often used as cues and considered important. The results of this study will be helpful quantitatively to reveal the strategies for a smooth interpersonal interaction, and to contribute to construct the model for a better communication in the daily life.
