Research Abstract |
We have shown that the motor leaning of the same limb is supported by partially overlapping neural processes for unimanual and bimanual movements. This conclusion is based on the following experimental observations obtained by an experimental paradigm using a robotic arm. 1) The motor learning effect of the left arm (or right arm) acquired through unimanual movement was only partially transferred to the same limb during bimanual movement. 2) Similarly, the motor learning transfer from bimanual to unimanual movement was partial. 3) The motor learning effect acquired through unimanual (or bimanual) movement could not be eliminated by washout trials performed bimanually (or unimanually). 4) Participants were able to adapt to two conflicting fame fields simultaneously when each force was assigned to each of unimanual and bimanual movements. We have also developed a mathematical model it has three compartment for unimanua-specific, bimanual-specific, and common memories for motor learning and the internal state is updated according the movement error. This model succeeded to reproduce all experimental results shown above.
