Research Abstract |
The present study was conducted over the 2-year-period from 2006 to 2007 in order to promote education that encourages students attending engineering high schools to make and create things in collaboration with universities. In 2006, high school teachers and students were invited to study at university laboratories (physics and chemistry laboratories). During the first half of 2007, high school teachers and students were again invited to study at university laboratories. During the second half of 2007, in order to ascertain the effects and outcomes of student experiences at university laboratories, a meeting was conducted during which the participating students presented their findings. The results of a questionnaire survey completed by the participating students indicated that their experiences at university laboratories were useful in developing and honing intellectual curiosity, logical thinking, and presentation skills. Furthermore, during the second half of 2007, a contest entitled "High school student creation competition" and a symposium entitled "Research activities and the AO examination" were held in order to verify the activities in 2006 and the first half of 2007. The symposium primarily highlighted poor PR on the side of high schools and poor awareness on the side of universities. In order to address the issues on both sides, the competition was held next. The competition facilitated the gathering of data regarding collaboration between engineering high schools and universities, thus encouraging students to make and create things and develop specialized skills through high school-university cooperation. The findings of the present study, collected in 2006 and 2007, have demonstrated the possibility of building a foundation for supporting human resource development based on creation by promoting awareness and creativity in students attending four engineering high schools.
