Research Abstract

All materials are built from particles (atoms, molecules, or ions). The arrangement and the movement of the particles define the property of the materials, as the aggregate of the particles. We have made web-based educational tools that show the animation of the movement of particles, as the result of molecular dynamics simulation.
In this study, a new educational tool, that reproduces the state change of sodium chloride and the dissolution of sodium chloride to water, was developed :

The highlight of the educational tool is as follows :
1. The state change of sodium chloride
The melting of sodium chloride causes the decrease in density, whereas the melting of ice causes the increase in density. In sodium chloride gas, a sodium ion and a chloride ion create a pair and move about together.
2. Dissolution of sodium chloride to water
Sodium ion and a chloride ion begin to dissolve from the surface of the sodium chloride cube to water, and completely dissolve at last.
