Research Abstract

The researcher has designed and developed blended learning for the Technical Reading course at the University of Aizu. All 2nd year level students at the University of Aizu have taken two (2) Technical Reading courses during the current year. The course delivery system includes a coherent combination of workflow pedagogy available through open source LMS software. The courses are also utilizing concept mapping and Java-based language quizzes to provide learners with multiple ways of understanding the course content and of developing their academic skills.
The accomplishments of this research are as follows :
a) implemented a learning management system which has now been used by all second year University of Aizu students during two years (approx. 1000 students)
b) implemented a group work/workflow system with all second year university students using the LMS
c) implemented concept mapping and Java-based language quizzes
d) developed an evaluation strategy, based on activity theory, for the formative evaluation of group work with learning management system that incorporates multiple correspondence analysis
This research made use of open source and free software to customize collaborative project-based processes in the context of technical reading and writing. It is important to maintain a systematic flow and sequence of activities in the collaborative learning models. However, it is equally important to understand how open source software can be adapted to various content areas ; not only reading, writing, but also computer science, and other technical areas.
An important implication of the present research is that strategies for managing e-learning courses in Japan may be relevant to similar courses developed for other Asian countries. The groundwork provided by this research has prepared the way for distance e-learning which will be offered in Vietnam. This is the departure point for subsequent research.
