Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study has been almost achieved within this two years project, which is to find the procedure for imitating the decorative patterns found only on the papers of 11th to 12th centuries. The patterns are the Japan's unique decorating techniques using dyed fibers onto base papers which are the RAMON ripple pattern and the TOBIKUMO floating cloud pattern, which were disappeared in 13th century and the UCHIKUMO cloud top pattern has survived till present day but it changed the shape. Those three patterns were successfully imitated and those making procedures were presented on the conferences. The critical are found at the fiber length and fibrillation, viscosity of suspension water and water permeability of the base paper. The tools for making patterns are found to be silk rough gauze for the ripple pattern and the cloud top pattern. Through the research we could get the ground to insist on the reason for disappearance of certain patterned papers, RAMON, TOBIKUMO, TOSHI and SUKIKAKE after 12th century, and the reason for remaining of UCHIKUMO pattern until present day.
