Research Abstract |
In traditional funeral customs in village society, it is considered that the reason why a funeral service had public character is because it is the event that members of neighborhood society participate in. Following the period advanced economic growth in the 1960s, ranking of funeral service expense were prepared into a price of an altar as a criterion. As a result, the funeral service became a ceremony to show a social position for society of the bereaved. On the other hand, the increased number of elderly people, along with a decrease in the birth rate have made further "individualization of death" advanced afterwards. By the whole country consciousness investigation, it is understood that people think funerals are" to do for the deceased", not "to do for the bereaved nor other people" In late years, same as a metropolitan area, the household of the old couple who stood alone increases in all cities. Because there is not a successor, number of persons increases who contract of one's funeral service while oneself lives. A tendency to regard a funeral service as "a thing of the people who are close to the deceased" becomes strong. However, on the other hand, funeral service custom to be characteristic of every area is each left. The funeral service and cemetery that were different form with that in metropolitan area seen. As a result, I understood that funeral diversification advanced by a nationwide level. It is difficult that the left bereaved do disposal of a possession of the deceased and grief=work alone. It is necessary to unify again the bereaved becoming separate by death of close persons, in a certain intimate community.. I think that various plans appearing as diversification of funeral custom are grope to deal with funeral individualization.
