Research Abstract

Necessary documents and materials were collected, put in order, and investigated at the initial stage of this research. Then, each of the research team was engaged in respective part of the research, in coordination with each other, in persuit of the genealogy of pre-modern thoughts in Japan.
The research team had interdisciprinary workshops twice, where the presentation of Dr. Ito and Dr. Noguchi as well as an article “One Step Further from Max Weber" by Professor Hashizume were discussed. The article revealed that the compound effect of Yamasaki Ansai's legitimacy theory, Neo-Confucianism by Ito Jinsai and Ogyu Sorai, and Japanese Studies by Motoori Norinaga was functionally equivalent to that of Protestantism in Western World.
The research team continuously worked on the reconstruction of Pre-modern thoughts in Japan until it drew the outline of its genealogy following the original research plan. It could also pointed out its afterwake in Modern Japan, namely Meiji era and early Showa era.
