Research Abstract |
The goal of this project is to analysis various quoted narratives, both quoted speech and quoted thoughts, used in Jin Ping Mei, from linguistic and stylistic point of view, and to illustrate its invention that enabled the new style of vernacular novels to be established during late-Ming period. In order to achieve the goal, we pursued the following process during the two-year period of this project. Firstly, we picked up broad examples of quoted narratives from the three major editions of Jin Ping Mei, Cihua edition, Chongzhen edition, and Zhang Zhupo edition. In order to illustrate Jin Ping Meis stylistic invention more clearly, we also carried out bibliographical and stylistic research on Qingpingshantang's Stories. As Qingpingshantang's Stories are one of the oldest existing vernacular narratives published in Jiajing era, taking the older examples into comparative consideration should be the essential assumption to understand Jin Ping Mei which appeared a hundred years later. As a result, we made five presentations, including four international conferences, and the topics of presentations vary from theoretical work on stylistics to bibliographical research on Qingpingshantang's Stories. Besides, we published an article on The Journal of Ming-Qing Fiction Studies, one of the most authoritative journals in China, and translated a theoretical work, Lydia Liu's "Translating National Character: Lu Xun and Arthur Smith". On the basis of these theoretical and bibliographical studies, we will continue to work on linguistic and stylistic research on Jin Ping Mei and other Ming vernacular narratives.
