Research Abstract

本年度は、英語の発話データの分析をおこない、そこで得られた知見に基づいて、英語諸方言の母音体系を表示するための独自の方法を考案・構築させた。その結果は「生成能力に厳しい制限を課す音韻表示の開発」において詳細に報告されている。今回考案・構築した分節内構造の表示モデルは、エレメント理論に基づいており、幾つかの革新的な様相を呈している。また、理論的に高い説明力をもつだけでなく、エレメント理論の枠組みにおける今後の研究に大きな影響力をもつと思われる。一例を取り上げると、研究代表者の提案のひとつに、母音弱化現象の新たな分析がある。そこでの主張は、英語の(強勢をもつ)完全母音と(強勢を失う)被弱化母音との相違は、分節内構造上の主要部性により決まるというものである。その結果、完全母音と被弱化母音の区別に加え、何も音韻的に指定を受けていない中立母音が英語には存在すると論じている。
英語の子音に関する分析の方では、唇音と軟口蓋音(及び、多少であるが、舌頂音と硬口蓋音について)の音響的・音韻的関係に焦点を当て、標準的エレメント理論とは大きく異なる表示を考案している。具体的には、標準的エレメント理論と異なり、唇音と軟口蓋音は両方とも|U|というエレメントで表示され、そのエレメントが主要部性を呈するかどうかで音声的特徴の違いが生じると考えた。この研究結果は以下の学会で報告された。"Features as speech signal patterns".Poster presented at the 16^<th> Manchester Phonology Meeting,University of Manchester,UK(2008年5月).
