Research Abstract |
The objective of this research is to develop Phonemic Awareness focused teaching and training materials for the teachers in elementary schools in Japan and to provide the product made on an experimental basis for the teachers for free. Tb this end, we undertook the following. In 2006 and 2007, we 1. conducted a survey on Japanese primary school teachers on the temperament of teachers and in-service English teacher education in Japan and analyzed the data. 2. surveyed the current status of English programs in Seoul, Korea and in Taipei, Taiwan. 3. visited primary schools, private language schools, and publishing companies in Seoul, Korea and in Taipei, Taiwan to observe classes and obtain curriculum references on English education. 4. conducted a documentary survey on phonemic awareness. 5. developed and produced CD material with the teachers' manual made on an experimental basis, and provided them to the primary school teachers who had replied to the questionnaires. Through the two-year survey results, we have learned of 1. the need for a graded English program to build improved English education in primary schools and in junior high schools in Japan. 2. the importance of a graded English instruction program with phonemic awareness with an emphasis on listening and speaking to the introduction of reading skills. 3. the importance of developing English teacher competency in primary school teachers and audio teaching and training materials for Japanese primary school teachers who are in charge of primary school English.
