Research Abstract |
This study adopted the method of "formative fieldwork [i. e., practice-creating-collaborative-fieldwork]" (Toma, 2004) throughout the project. In the year 2006, I generated a working model of a system which supports development of children, parents, and communities through generating multifaceted practice at a nursery school In the year 2007, using the model, I carried out the practice generating research project aiming to turn a public nursery school into a community which supports the development of children and the development of adults as parents. The results of the research projects were as follows: 1) children showed multifaceted growth including cognitive, social, motivational, and emotional development through participating in the mixed-age group activities which were designed and implemented into the everyday practice of the nursery school as a key aspect of this project; 2) by incorporating parents into the practice of nursery school (i. e., providing visiting days for observ

ing the mixed age group activities, giving seminars in order to communicate the importance of such practice, providing opportunities for the parent to chat with other parents, staff, and the researcher, and providing consultation on child raring), we could support parents to grow as parents as they witness children's development through new practices.; 3) through collaborating with the researcher to carry out these multi-layered practice, staff members of the nursery school cultivated their ability to relating to both children and to their parents. The stuffs also communicated among themselves more frequently, more joyfully and more deeply. They also developed mutual support system for carrying out the practice creatively. The need for devising realistic and concrete system for supporting the development of children and parents has been well recognized social theme in Japan for sometime. This project responded to such pressing need by demonstrating how to appreciate and enhance the potential of a nursery school as a place where we can start generating practice which could lead to creating the system of "village" for raising children.
