Research Abstract |
Our research project aims to consider, from a viewpoint of long term effects of cultural capital, the processes of transition from university to work in France and in Japan. We focused especially on the cultural learning throughout student life, which promotes physical acquirement of cultural capital, and which may have relevance to the career building of university students in these days. In fiscal year 2006, we first examined the transformation of professional qualification granted to university degree in France. According to the national survey results, we found particularly the combination of the traditional apprenticeship of craft (metier) and the new international "standard" of competency. Secondly, in order to apply this idea to Japanese social context, we analyzed the processes of career building through four years of student life, on the basis of a panel survey in Joetsu University of Education and partly in private university and junior college in the Kansai district. In FY 2007, we presented an analysis of how university students form their cultural capital through the medium of their past experiences and their present college life. We were able to identify a tendency for students to form their cultural capital through pluralistic processes that anticipated socialization in terms of adapting to the various demands in their college life. Next, in addition to the student survey of the previous year, we implemented a survey research of graduates for the past five years in Joetsu University of Education. After the graduation, we found not only an effect of cultural learning during their student life, but also an additional effect that accelerates their learning with work experiences.
