Research Abstract |
1. As for the first topic, to reconsider Sullivan's architectural theory and design, we collected many precious materials, for example, some manuscripts written by Sullivan himself, and building photographs which was not published ever, from some institutes in Chicago, New York, etc. We studied those materials, and then, we published 3 peer-reviewed papers (in the Journal of Architectural Planning, Architectural institute of Japan),and a dissertation. In this study, we made clear that the Sullivan's word "Mobile Equilibrium" is quite important concept to connect his pantheistic view of nature, his theory of organic architecture, and his characteristic design method. 2. In the latter study, we researched Sullivan's masterpieces, Auditorium Building, Wainwright Building, and Van Allen Building which were adaptive-reused. For example, in Van Allen Building, we made clear the details including the process of that project through the interview with some persons who were concerned the project, and working drawings we obtained there. And, in addition, to study adaptive-reused buildings designed by Sullivan's contemporaneous architects, we researched examples in 6 cities in the United States. And then, we presented the research results in 4 papers (in Annual Meeting of Architectural Institute of Japan, 2007), and published "Architectural Conversions in the World" from Kajima-publishing.
