Research Abstract |
The primary purpose of this research is to discuss key issues of dominant certification scheme through a comparison of status of program implementation. On the other hand, the important of another parallel approach and measure - Code of Forest Practices-to promote environmentally sound harvesting activities is also discussed. The formula and implementations of these codes are far from perfect, but have significantly contributed to advancing forest harvesting practices. Two types of approaches-forest certification and practice codes will play an important role as a "catalyst" and "powerful driver" towards responsible forest harvesting practices because these initiatives have requirements related to corporate environmental policies, industrial process planning, use of best available technology, self-auditing, and a commitment to continual improvement. 1. Japanese certification in perspective : Missing or Weakness identified through certification programs Most of the information identified as "missing" or "weakness" relative to each of criteria was surprisingly similar for the different types of forest operation, and they delineated of particular relevance to management context of Japanese plantation forestry. The key issue of any certification programs is its ability to protect and enhance the values of the sustainable forestry on-the ground. 2. Codes of practice for forest harvesting : issues and options Similarly, through interacting with certification schemes most codes will make it possible to achieve a desire harvesting activities in a way that meets standards for SFM because these initiatives have requirements related to corporate environmental policies and a commitment to continual operational improvement in many parts of the world's largest forested jurisdictions.
