Research Abstract

【Clinical epidemiological study】
Effects of systemic factors on root resorption duiing orthodontic tooth movement in human
The objective of this study was to determine whether there is an association between excessive root resorption and immune system factors. The questionnaire sought information on medical history included local or systemic diseases, details on medication type and use, and the presence of allergies and asthma. In this study, we determined the presence of allergies and asthma by the diagnosis of medical doctors. Moreover, we conducted the study to determine whether there is an association between TMJ osteoarthritis/osteoarthrosis (OA) and immune system factors. The records of 41 subjects (7 males, age 22.0 ± 3.8 years; 34 females, age 24.8 ± 6.3 years)and 41 pair-matched controls (7 males, age 22.1 ± 2.3 years; 34 females, age 24.8 ± 6.4 years) based on age and gender, were reviewed. Information on medical history included local or systemic diseases, details on medicatio … More n type and use, and the presence of allergies and asthma. Dental history questions referred to details regarding past oral injuries. The validity of our hypothesis, defining allergies and asthma as risk factors in OA, was tested by using the logistic regression analysis. The incidence of allergy was significantly higher in the TMJ OA (p=.008) , with a mean odds ratio of 4.125 and 95% confidence interval of 1.446-11.769. These results suggest that allergy may be a risk factor in association with TMJ OA in this Japanese sample.
【Animal experiment study】
Effect of systemic inflammation factors on root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement in rats
The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether there is an association between excessive root resorption and the systemic factors in rats with adjuvant-induced inflammation. The maxillary first molar was moved using a removable titanium-nickel alloy closed coil spring for 7days. On day 7 of tooth movement, the rats were sacrificed and the maxillae were immediately removed, fixed, and decalcified in 10 % EDTA solution. The tissues were then snap-frozen in liquid nitrogen. The histochemical staining for TRAP was carried out to identify osteoclasts and odontoclasts for active bone and root resorption. The roots of the maxillary first molars from adjuvant rats had significantly greater TRAP positive scores than those of the control group. Less
