Research Abstract |
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of enhancement on mandibular growth during forward mandibular positioning simultaneous with prevention of flaring of mandibular incisors. Fifteen 28 days old male rats were randomly divided into two experimental groups (n = 5) and one control (n = 5).Jumping appliances were fitted to position the mandibular forward in the 2 experimental groups. The mandibular incisors were ligatured to the alveolar bone between mandibular 1st and 2nd molars in the one group of experimental groups (L group),and were not ligatured in the other group of experimental groups (NL group). Standardized head radiographs were taken immediately before experimental (TO) and at 1 (T1),2 (T2),3 (T4) and 4 (T4) weeks after the appliances were fitted. The mandibular length, ramus height, mandibular body length and axial inclination of mandibular incisor were measured, and then those values were compared among the 3 groups. Although the spurt of increasing the mandibular length, ramus height and mandibular body length was T0-T1 and T2-T3 in L group,it was only T0-T1 in NL group and only T2-T3 in control. The increase of mandibular length and ramus height on the L group and NL group were lager than those on the control in T0-T1. Furthermore, the growth of mandibular length and ramus height on the L group and control were lager than those on the NL group in T2-T3. Although the axial inclination of mandibular incisor was tipped labially through the experimental period in the NL group,it was not change in the L group and control. The number of mandibular growth spurt was increased in the L group. This might be brought by prevention of flaring of mandibular incisors which leads to maintaine the forward mandibular positioning.
