Research Abstract

Background and aims: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors in workers related with job satisfaction and the working environment of hospitals The study subjects were all staff working at prefectural hospitals in Niigata. Qestionnaires were distributed to 2, 182 staffs in 9 of 15 prefectural hospitals.
Materials and methods: The KJ methods were used for the 63-items questionnaires. The items were divided into nine groups:
1: Job Satisfaction; 2: Appropriate Relationship with One's Superior; 3: Clear Evaluation System; 4: Evaluation of the Management's Ideas and Policy; 5: Work to Achieve the Management's Ideas; 6: Independent Workability; 7: the Hospital's Concept and the Transmission of the Goals; 8: The Atmosphere recognizing the autonomy; and 9: the Workplace in Cooperation with Others
Results: Qestionnaires were returned by 1,185 respondents (response rate of 54.3%), and the rate of valid respondents was 78.1%. Seven hundred and forty-two of the respondents were female (8 … More 0.1%), the average age was 39.5±10.6, with 30.8% being in their 40's. The years worked ranged from 0〜9 (68.5%), and respondents from 9 occupations participated in the study, 68.6% of whom were nurses. The result of the multiplex analysis: age and occupations from 9 groups were revised, in a stepwise manner, and two of the 9 groups in particular had an influence on job satisfaction, namely groups 2 and 9, 'Appropriate Relationship' and 'the Workplace in Cooperation with Others', respectively. The most important consideration was to build good relationships with each other, and Evaluation of the Management's Idea and the Policy earned high points. It is very important that the concepts are thoroughly understood and evaluated and that staff are asked to attend to their work faithfully.
Broken down by occupation, job satisfaction was highest among physicians and lowest among nurses. Among the others, pharmacists respected the law to do their duty and in the evaluation of their work. Each occupation had their own specific factors, so a future study is warranted into the factors associated with each occupation. Less
