Research Abstract

The purpose of this research was to build up the educational points for nurses in nursing homes, by making sure the support for self-management of older-old people with diabetes in nursing homes.
Semi-constructed interviews, about the actual situations of support for self-management of older-old with diabetes, for nurses in nursing homes were planned. Based on the results of the interviews, specialist meetings were planned for discussing about the educational points for nurses in nursing home.
Interviews were made for 17 nurses, and the details (problems on self-management, actual support for them and problems in support) of the support for 29 older-old with diabetes were collected, analyzed and classified.
The specialist meetings were held twice. At the first meeting, the results of interviews were presented and the opinions of specialists were collected for defining the support subjects. The support subjects were "activation of daily life", "realization of well-regulated life", "support … More for raising self-esteem", "realization of therapeutic moderation", objective setting and evaluation". At the second meeting, the educational points which were made from the results of interviews and the opinions of specialists in the first meeting were presented and further opinions were collected. The needed care were for "activation of life and well-regulated life", " keeping self-esteem", "appealing to the energy to live", "not opening the file of anxiety", "making the most of the strength "activation of brain" "putting priority on brain and feeling of being alive ", "making individual pleasure", "leaning from self selection and failure" and "leaning from accumulation of case study in nurses". These care were concluded in the two ways of learning activity, "the care for brain" and "individuality oriented case study".
According to these results, "the core study program for the support of older-old with diabetes" for the caring professionals in health, medical and welfare field, is planned in A-district in Okinawa Prefecture. Less
