Research Abstract |
Hearing-impaired students at institutions of higher education require greater support to advance their literacy skills and to assure their access to information. Research into the development of literacy among the hearing-impaired is lacking or insufficient at best. This research explores the development of programs to improve literacy among hearing-impaired students in higher education with the aim to assure the quality of university education. We analyzed eight short trial education programs over a four-year period. We established an environment where students were provided free access to a wide variety of topics to facilitate a familiarity with printed information. The results demonstrate a distinct increase in students' motivation leading to improved literacy.
