Research Abstract

深海底における酸素濃度プロファイルの可視化を行う装置「二次元オプトード」を開発し、相模湾初島沖と下北半島沖において観測を行った。この結果、酸素は海底に、拡散によって定常的に広く浅く、生物撹乱によって短時間に深く狭い領域にもたらされること、前者による深さは3〜8mm程度であることが明らかになった。相模湾海底では、酸素が検出されない深度(深さ1-3cm)において、活発に活動する底生有孔虫類(Globobulimina sp.)を発見した。この有孔虫は、酸素に依存しない呼吸システムを獲得している可能性がある。
