Research Abstract

独立前夜の南インドに着目することにより、従来の北インド・デリーでの政治動向を中心とする、インド国民会議派を主軸に据えた研究とは異なる、新しい独立運動史を提示した。特に着目に値する解明点は、南インドでは、非バラモン運動の存在ゆえに、インド国民会議派が推進する「インド国民」統合政策に潜在するバラモン的価値観と北インド中心思想への反発が強く、その政策に再考を迫ったこと、非バラモン運動がヒンドゥー教徒内部からのヒンドゥー教へのアンチテーゼであったために会議派に対する脅威となったこと、とりわけ同運動が共産主義化したことが一層会議派の動向に影響を与えたこと、更にそのことが、第二次大戦の最中に開始されたインド独立交渉において、南インド出身の会議派政治家をして、分離的傾向を示すムスリム多住地域を切り離してでも(パーキスターン承認)、一刻も早い国内統合・内政安定化を目指す政策を選択せしめたことである。
